Emma Kapteyn (Chance-to-Choreograph Artist 2023)
Emma Kapteyn’s love of dance and choreography began in West Michigan, at a small studio in her hometown. She danced, taught, and choreographed as a high school student for the studio’s competitive team. She then trained at Grand Rapids Ballet and West Michigan Youth Ballet while still in school to further develop her artistic skills. During her final year of high school, she joined the Ballet Chicago Studio Company to continue her training. There, she performed in Daniel Duell’s Hansel and Gretel, Ted Seymour’s LongLivingLine, and The Nutcracker.
Upon finishing high school, Emma decided to continue her education at University of Utah, pursing a BFA in Ballet. During her two years with the University of Utah, she had the opportunity to take classes in Kinesiology, Choreography, Jazz, Music Theory, and Stagecraft/Lighting and began her training for her Pilates Mat certification. Upon returning to Chicago and transferring schools in her junior year to DePaul University to pursue a BA in Philosophy, she was able to revisit her dancing, choreographic, and teaching passions with Ballet Chicago. She has created two pieces for Ballet Chicago’s annual fall show, DanceVision, and continues to teach children’s classes throughout the year. She is eager to continue to explore her choreographic ideas and develop her teaching philosophies and methods. You can view more of Emma’s work on her website: www.emmakapteyn.com
